The complete story so far - the missing will, the son who returns after eleven years, and what Malti Devi has been protecting all along.
This is the complete story of The Last Letter of Malti Devi from the first episode to the current track. If you are starting the serial late, everything you need is here.
How the story begins
Malti Devi has lived in the same house in Chhapra for thirty-one years. She married into it at nineteen, raised two sons in it, and has never once been asked what she wanted from it. Her husband Ramashankar was a schoolteacher who kept careful records of everything - land papers, grain accounts, the electricity bill from 1994 - and when he dies in the opening episode, the family assumes his affairs will be as tidy as his handwriting.
They are not. At the thirteenth-day ceremony, a lawyer from Patna arrives with an envelope Ramashankar deposited with him four years earlier. It states that a second will exists, written in his own hand, and that it is kept in the house. It does not say where.
The family divides
The elder son, Vinod, has managed the family shop since his father grew ill and has always assumed the house and the shop would be his. His wife Sarita, practical and sharp-tongued, sees the second will as a threat to be found and destroyed before anyone else reads it. Their conflict with Malti Devi is not loud at first. It shows in small things: a locked almirah, a room she is asked not to clean, a visitor turned away at the gate.
The younger son, Devesh, returns from Pune after eleven years of silence. He left after a quarrel nobody in the family will describe, and he comes back only because his mother asked him to. Devesh has no interest in the property. He wants to know what the letter says, because he suspects it explains why he was made to leave.
What Malti Devi knows
Through the first thirty episodes the audience learns, in pieces, that Malti Devi is not searching for the will. She has already read it. She found it two years before her husband died, in a place so ordinary that nobody else has thought to look, and she has kept its contents to herself.
